Contemporary Thai Artist
Montien Boonma
The Pagoda & Cosmos Drawn with Earth
Exhibition

Montien Boonma was born in Bangkok in 1953 and died in 2000. Rising to international acclaim in the 1990s, he was one of the most prominent artists of his time in Thailand. Working with burlap bags, water buffalo horns, birdcages and other items, and coating his artworks in earthy tints that gave them weightiness, he had a strong interest at this time in using materials and objects that could be obtained from his surrounding environment. This solo exhibition—his first in Japan—comprised 11 artworks that recalled both the rich Buddhist tradition and the remarkable economic growth shaping Thai society at the time.
